Frequently Asked Pet Surgery Questions

Is Anesthesia Safe for My Pet?

Anesthesia is much safer today than it has been in the past. This is because we now have digital anesthesia monitors that keep close track of your pet’s vitals and alerts us of any changes immediately. Anesthesia can also be administered through gas or an IV, which adds more options and increases the procedure’s safety.

Why Can’t I Feed My Pet Before Surgery?

We agree it is hard to convince your pet that skipping a couple of meals before surgery is necessary and for their health, but this is done for an important reason!

Food in the stomach during anesthesia can lead to regurgitation, resulting in asphyxiation (choking to death). Removing your pet’s access to food for eight to twelve hours prior to surgery makes their surgery possible and safe.

Can You Perform Other Procedures While My Pet Is Under Anesthesia?

While your pet is under anesthesia, it’s the perfect time to:

  • Clean ears
  • Clean teeth
  • Perform teeth extractions
  • Remove small lumps
  • Trim nails
  • Microchip
  • Flush your pet’s tear ducts

Will My Pet Be Monitored during and after Surgery?

We will watch your pet’s heart rate, breathing patterns, temperature, blood pressure, and blood oxygenation during surgery. We will keep a close eye on your pet and also provide warm blankets or heating pads to keep him comfortable at all times.
