Dermatology

Similar to people, animals can have skin conditions that affect their health. This is why there is dermatology for pets.  At North Heights Veterinary Clinic in Appleton, we care about all aspects of your pet's health and we can help your pet if they have skin problems. Most skin problems manifest themselves as irritation or a rash that is uncomfortable for your pet.

Causes of rash and irritation

Many things can cause skin problems for your pet. It could be a simple matter of dandruff, but fleas, ticks, and various kinds of mites or other parasites can cause worse irritation. These things can also lead to fungal infections, causing allergy dermatitis, and even mange which is more serious. Allergies can also be a cause of skin rash or irritation. In that case, we can help you determine the cause of the allergy so it can be treated.

Symptoms to look for

Dogs, and even cats, like to scratch themselves. It may or may not mean anything. The important thing to look for is whether the scratching becomes excessive. You should also examine the pet to watch for signs of rash, or redness where they have scratched too much. Fleas and ticks are often the cause of excessive scratching.  Watch for redness where the animal has been scratching. If there is redness, it needs to be addressed. Dogs shed hair, but when there is excessive hair loss, that should be a concern. Dull coats are another symptom that something is causing a problem.

Skin treatment

There are flea and tick repellents you can use, as well as pills you can purchase from your veterinarian that will take care of most skin problems. Bathing dogs or cats regularly, but not too often, is also generally good for their skin. Some dogs need special food if they have extra-sensitive skin. If you get to the point that there is redness,  then your veterinarian may need to get involved. If the dog or cat has allergies, you can get help from your vet with managing the symptoms.
